A Vidi Case Study

Second Harvest Food Bank

Telling the story of hunger and hope.

What They Saw
When a community understands the true story of need, hope becomes something we build together.
For over four decades, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (SHFB) has been one of the region’s most vital institutions—feeding millions, empowering families, and anchoring emergency response efforts across six counties. Vidi’s relationship with SHFB stretches back to our very first year as a studio. What began as a small testimonial project for their Culinary Training Program became the start of an eight-year creative partnership centered on storytelling that moves people to act.

SHFB initially approached Vidi for help capturing a single student’s story. But beneath that simple request was a larger truth: their impact was profound, yet the community rarely saw the lived experiences behind the statistics. The opportunity was to translate their mission into narrative—stories that could illuminate the unseen, dignify those facing hardship, and inspire collective action across Central Florida.

A mission too large for traditional messaging
SHFB was respected, well-known, and deeply effective—but the public often encountered the organization through numbers rather than narratives. Donors understood the scale of hunger, but not the people behind the need. The community recognized SHFB's name, but not the emotional depth of its work.
Our earliest collaboration—capturing the journey of a Culinary Program graduate—sparked the “Because of You” storytelling series. That initial spark clarified something essential: SHFB didn’t just need content; they needed a new way to communicate impact rooted in lived experience, dignity, and hope.
This insight became even more urgent after 2020. With the baseline need rising, funding shifting, and community fatigue growing, SHFB needed stories that could reveal the human side of hunger and reinforce why their work—and their donors—mattered more than ever.
We expanded the “Because of You” concept into a short docu-story series, capturing the voices of clients moving through hardship with courage, resilience, and aspiration. These films became the emotional centerpiece of SHFB’s annual giving event—now The Ultimate Garden Party—where a single story, shown at the event’s climax, helped increase donor giving by more than 5x. Impact became visible. Hope became communal.
With the success of the event storytelling model, SHFB engaged Vidi in an even more ambitious effort: documenting the inner workings of the organization—the operational engine that feeds Central Florida day after day, and especially in times of crisis. Over eight months, Vidi filmed across counties, embedded with staff, traced supply chains, captured emergency response moments, and curated archival materials (including the organization’s origins with Disney’s Harvest Program).
The result was an 8-part docushort series illustrating what the public doesn’t see: the people, logistics, history, and emotional labor behind fighting hunger and feeding hope. Meeting neighbors where they are.
This project reflected one of Vidi’s core beliefs: that impact organizations must tell stories that reveal the true context of their work—because understanding leads to empathy, and empathy leads to action.
"...their team produce high quality, heartwarming videos, which showcase the Second Harvest mission and the impact our organization’s work has in the life of an individual or family in our community."

What We Saw
Branding the story of hunger and hope
Vidi partnered with SHFB to build a long-term storytelling system—one capable of honoring real people’s lives while strengthening the organization’s regional presence.

Where They Are
Feeding Hope, fighting the daily disaster, meeting neighbors where they are
Eight years later, SHFB remains one of Vidi’s most meaningful and enduring partnerships. Together, we’ve built a storytelling practice that strengthens donor trust, deepens community understanding, and honors the humanity of those they serve.

Through this work, Second Harvest has:
  • Increased donor engagement and giving through story-centered fundraising events
  • Established a long-term documentary storytelling system revealing both human and operational impact
  • Expanded its regional visibility through emotionally resonant films and campaigns
  • Strengthened volunteer engagement and community awareness across counties
  • Preserved and activated historical and archival materials to contextualize SHFB’s legacy
  • Built a scalable media library featuring clients, staff, and partner organizations
What began as a single testimonial film has grown into a narrative movement—one that continues to shape how Central Florida understands hunger, hope, and the collective effort required to meet both.

For Vidi, SHFB has been a partner that’s shaped our studio’s belief in what storytelling can do. We’ve stood inside warehouses, kitchens, farms, distribution lines, and homes—witnessing impact from macro to micro, from hearts to hands, from source to table. And through that immersion, our work has been guided by a shared mission: to help communities see, understand, and come together to create the change they wish for.
